Transparency

At Wishy, we believe you should understand exactly how we handle your data and power our features. This page explains the processes behind our platform in clear, simple terms.

Product Verification

When you see the Verified by Wishy badge, it means we've successfully extracted product information from the URL you provided.

What "Verified" Means
  • The URL points to a real product page from a recognized online store
  • Product details (title, image, price) were automatically extracted from the page
  • Our system has confidence that the extracted data is accurate
How It Works

When you add a product by URL, our system reads the page and extracts key product information using industry-standard web formats that retailers use to describe their products. This is similar to how search engines and social media platforms display product information when you share a link.

When Verification Fails

If we can't extract reliable information from a URL, we'll ask you to enter the details manually instead. This ensures you always have accurate product information in your wishlists, even for websites we don't fully support yet.

URL Fetching & Privacy Protections

When you add a product by URL, we fetch that page to extract product details. To protect your privacy and security, we've implemented multiple layers of protection that prevent our system from accessing sensitive or personal pages.

Product Page Validation

We only process URLs that appear to be public product pages. If a URL passes our security checks but doesn't look like a product page, we'll ask you to add the item details manually instead. This prevents accidental processing of non-product content.

What Happens When a URL is Blocked

If you try to add a URL that we can't safely process, you'll see a message explaining why. You can always add items manually by entering the title, image URL, and other details yourself — this ensures you can still add any product to your wishlist while keeping your private information safe.

Data Safety

As an extra precaution, we automatically check extracted content for any accidentally captured personal information and remove it before storing product data. Only product-related information (title, price, image, description) is saved to your wishlist.

Product Matching

When you add a product from one store and someone else adds the same product from a different store, Wishy can recognize them as the same item. This "product matching" enables features like price comparison across stores.

How It Works

Products often have unique identifiers that are consistent across different retailers. When we extract product information, we look for these identifiers to determine if two products from different stores are actually the same item. When identifiers aren't available, we use other product attributes to find potential matches.

Why Product Matching Matters
  • Price comparison — See prices from multiple stores for the same product
  • Duplicate detection — We'll let you know if an item is already on your list
  • Trending insights — Understand which products are popular across the community

Price Comparison

When a product is available at multiple stores, Wishy shows you all available purchase options so you (or whoever is buying the gift) can choose the best deal.

How Price Comparison Works
1

You Add a Product

When you add a product by URL, we extract price information from that store.

2

We Match the Product

If the same product was previously added from a different store, we link them together.

3

View All Options

Click "Compare Prices" on any product to see all available stores and their prices.

Price Freshness

To provide a fast experience, we cache extracted product information for a short period. This means if you add the same URL again quickly, you'll see the cached data rather than re-fetching from the store. Prices are refreshed automatically to stay current.

Store Availability

Price comparison is only available for products that have been added from multiple stores by Wishy users. The more users add products, the more store options appear in comparisons. We support most major online retailers.

How Claiming Works

Claiming is how gift-givers coordinate to avoid duplicate purchases. When someone claims an item on your wishlist, other viewers see it's been claimed so they can choose something else.

What Happens When You Claim
  1. 1You select an item and how many you'll buy
  2. 2Choose to claim with your display name or anonymously
  3. 3The item shows as claimed to other viewers immediately
  4. 4You can undo your claim if you change your mind
What Data is Stored

When you claim an item, we store:

  • Display name — Only if you choose to claim with your name; otherwise "Anonymous"
  • Email — If you're logged in (used only for undo functionality)
  • Quantity claimed — How many of the item you're buying
  • Timestamp — When the claim was made
Real-Time Updates

Claims update instantly for everyone viewing the wishlist. When someone claims an item, all other viewers see the change immediately without refreshing the page. This prevents two people from accidentally claiming the same item at the same time.

No Purchase Tracking

Wishy doesn't track whether you actually purchased the item after claiming. The claim system is purely for coordination between gift-givers. We never know if a transaction occurred, what you paid, or any payment details.

Data Storage & Security

We take the security of your data seriously. Here's how we store and protect your information.

Where Your Data Lives

Wishy uses trusted, industry-standard infrastructure:

Supabase

Database, authentication, and real-time features. Data is stored in secure, managed PostgreSQL databases with encryption at rest.

Vercel

Application hosting and edge network. Pages load quickly from servers geographically close to you.

Security Practices
  • Encryption in transit — All connections use HTTPS/TLS
  • Encryption at rest — Database storage is encrypted
  • Magic link authentication — No passwords stored
  • Row-level security — Users can only access their own data
  • PII sanitization — Personal data is stripped from scraped content
Your Control Over Your Data

You have full control over your data on Wishy:

  • Edit or delete any wishlist, item, or profile information at any time
  • Control visibility with private, unlisted, or public settings
  • Delete your account to remove all your data
  • Undo claims if you change your mind about a gift
Data We Don't Collect

To respect your privacy, we intentionally don't collect:

  • Payment information (purchases happen on retailer sites)
  • Precise location data
  • Browsing history outside of Wishy
  • Contacts or address book access
